Questions

Questions, answered.

The legal bits, booking and payment, and what to expect on the day.

Is a secular wedding legal in North Carolina?

A secular ceremony is legal when the officiant is authorized under NC law. G.S. 51-1 allows a magistrate, or an ordained or authorized minister of a religious denomination, to solemnize a marriage. NC courts have questioned instant online ordinations, so we don't rely on one.

Colin is completing his endorsement as a Humanist Society Celebrant. The Humanist Society is a long-standing national body that endorses humanist clergy and celebrants, which is the path secular officiants in North Carolina rely on instead of one-click online ordinations. We only confirm ceremony dates once that endorsement is in place.

What makes the marriage official?

A valid NC marriage license, both of you declaring you take each other as spouses in front of the officiant and two adult witnesses, and the signed license being returned to the Register of Deeds. We handle the return.

Do we need witnesses?

Yes, two, both at least 18. Bring your own, or add ours for $50.

Can same-sex couples marry with you?

Absolutely. Every couple who can legally marry in North Carolina is welcome.

Are you affiliated with the county or the courthouse?

No. We're an independent officiant service, not part of Mecklenburg County, the Register of Deeds, or the courts.

Booking and payment

How far ahead do we need to book?

Request as soon as you know your date. Short-notice requests are welcome; Colin confirms within one business day, and same-week dates are often possible.

Do you do weekends?

Select weekend times are available. Request your preferred date and we'll confirm what's open.

How does payment work?

Requesting a time is free. After Colin confirms, you'll get a secure online payment link. Pay before the ceremony. The county's $60 license fee is paid to the county separately.

What if we need to reschedule or cancel?

Reschedule free with 24 hours' notice. Cancel more than 48 hours ahead for a full refund.

Do you travel outside Charlotte?

Local elopements cover Charlotte city limits. For elsewhere in Mecklenburg County or nearby, email us for a quote.

The day itself

What should we bring?

Your marriage license, photo ID, and your two witnesses (unless you added ours). Rings, vows, and a photographer are optional.

Can we write our own vows?

Yes. Read them, or have Colin lead you through them line by line.

Can family and friends watch?

Of course. For larger groups, check whether your location needs a reservation. See permit tips.

Will there be any religious content?

No. Ceremonies are fully secular unless you specifically ask to include a reading or tradition that matters to you.

What happens after we sign?

We return the license to the Register of Deeds within 10 days. Once it's recorded, you can order certified copies from the county for name changes, insurance, and immigration paperwork.
